Mark Scherzer is selling a large portion of his 300 piece collection of Vaseline glass at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium. Mark stated, "I love the mystery of glass and how it glows in the sunlight." Vaseline glass, created in the mid-1800's, was not perfected until the late 1890's. Glassblowers added small amounts of uranium oxide to their glass formulas creating a brilliant yellow colored glass. This mysterious glass has many names uranium glass, canary glass, topaz glass, yellow glass and lemon glass, but it wasn't until the 1950's that it was referred to as Vaseline glass.

With the explosion of the pressed glass industry in the late 1890's more than 30 companies produced more than 70 different patterns of Vaseline glass. Complete table setting for daily use, lamps door knobs, medicinal bottles, vanity sets, decanters, drapery ties, candlesticks and banquet pieces were produced throughout the 1940's. Reproductions surged in the late 1950's through 1970's as glass moulds were sold.

When asked how to tell old and newer Vaseline glass, Mark stated, "It's really hard to tell old from the newer since the moulds were sold. Educate yourself through books, look for wear marks, look for bubbles in the glass and count the number of mould marks. Purchase a small hand held black light." Under an ultraviolet or black light, the glass fluoresces, or glows green.

Mark has created a fantastic display of Vaseline glass at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, New Jersey. The shop is one half hour from Philadelphia, 1 and a half hours from New York City and is open 7 days a week, 10 am to 5 pm. You may purchase Vaseline glass at very reasonable and affordable prices.
